Ingredients- Prawns - 250 gms
- Shallot - 1 cup
- Ginger - 2 inch
- Green chillies - 1
- Curry leaves - 2 twigs
- Tamarind -1 gooseberry size
- Red chilli powder - 1.5 tbsp
- Coriander powder - 1.5 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
- Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
Procedure
- Clean prawns well. Remove the vein from the top
- Cut shallots and ginger in to small pieces
- Cut green chillies length wise.
- Make tamarind juice by squeezing tamarind in 1 cup of water.
- In a manchatti or pan, cook prawns with 1 tbsp of red chilli powder, salt and tamarind juice. Water should be just enough to cover half the prawns. Prawn will ooze lot of water while cooking.
- It will take 5-6 minutes for prawn to cook well.
- In another pan, heat oil.
- Add shallot, green chillies, curry leaves and ginger and stir for few minutes till the shallots starts browning.
- Add remaining red chilli powder, coriander and turmeric powder. Stir for 3 minutes or till the raw smell goes away.
- Add the cooked prawns. If there is any water left over in the manchatti, add that too into the pan.
- Mix well and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Yummy prawn ularthiyathu is ready and can be served with rice or chappathi.
Note: Thinly sliced coconut pieces can be added along with shallots in step 8. Coconut pieces should be fried well before adding prawn.
