Procedure
- Raw rice / Sona masoori rice - 0.5 cup
- Moong dal - 1/3 cup
- Jaggery - 0.5 cup
- Milk - 0.5 cup
- Water - 1 cup
- Cardamom - 1 tsp
- Ghee - 2 tbsp
- Cashew nuts - 6
- Raisins - 6
- Grated coconut - 2 tbsp (optional)
- Banana (elakki small) - 1 (optional)
Procedure
- Wash rice and dal well.
- Add the rice and dal into a cooker.
- Add milk and water into the cooker.
- Heat the pressure cooker for upto 5 whistles.
- When the pressure is released, open the cooker. Rice and dal should be cooked well till they are mushy.
- Add jaggery and mix well.
- In a pan, add ghee.
- Add raisins to this and remove them when it pops up.
- Then add cashews. Remove when it becomes light brown.
- Add the fried cashews and raisins and cardamom powder to the rice.
- Mix well and heat it till it reaches the required consistency.
- Add coconut and banana (cut into small round pieces) to this optionally.
- Yummy shakara pongal is ready to be served.
Note:
- We can prepare this without the moong dal as well.
- More jaggery can be added if you have a sweet tooth
