Ingredients for the gravy
- Shallots - 30 + 10
- Tomato - 1 medium
- Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp
- Fenugreek powder - 1 tsp
- Ginger - garlic paste - 1 tbsp
- Tamarind - 1 gooseberry size
- Curry leaves - 1 twig
- Oil
Procedure
- Clean the fish well.
- Marinate the fish using the ingredients for marination for 30 minutes.
- Peel and cut shallots
- Cut tomato into small pieces
- Keep aside 10 shallots from this.
- Pulse the remaining shallots, tomato, red chilli powder, fenugreek powder and ginger and garlic paste in a mixie.
- In a pan, shallow fry the fish and keep it aside
- Heat oil in the pan
- Place the fish and fry one side for 2 minutes
- Flip the fish to the other side.
- Fry again for 2 minutes
- In the same pan, add the cut shallots and curry leaves
- Fry it till the shallots have browned.
- Add the ground gravy paste
- Stir and fry till the raw smell goes away.
- Add the tamarind juice and salt to this and mix well.
- Place the fried kana fish into this and cover with the gravy.
- After a minutes, flip the fish carefully and again cover with gravy. Make sure the fish is completely covered.
- After few more minutes when the gravy becomes almost dry, drizzle a bit of oil and some more curry leaves.
- Yummy Kana masala fry is ready to be served with neer dosa or rice.
